ABOUT WOODMONT ACADEMY

Who we are

Woodmont Academy is a private, independent Pre-K through grade 8 Catholic school, approved by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. We implement the method of education developed by the Legionaries of Christ, known as Integral FormationSM, which endeavors to form the whole child, their intellect, faith, character and disposition toward service. The core of Woodmont Academy is its Catholic identity. Leading young people to know and love Jesus Christ ensures the pursuit of superior academics and excellence in character formation.

Our Campus
Our school is situated in Cooksville on a beautiful 66-acre campus in western Howard County, Maryland. Our facilities include a new middle school building, complete with gym, multi-purpose room, and eight classrooms with separate boys’ and girls’ wings. Two other buildings on campus are home to grades 1 through 5 classrooms, one building is dedicated to Pre-K, kindergarten and aftercare, one building houses the Chapel and a second multi-purpose room, and another in the school administration building.

School Motto
The mission of Woodmont Academy is reflected in the motto Integer. This is the Latin word which means "whole," or "entire," and reflects our mission to create the "Whole Man In Christ." The school dictum, Semper Altius, Latin for "Always Higher," challenges students to strive for excellence in all areas of their integral formation.

Coat of Arms
The Woodmont Academy coat of arms/crest is composed of a shield divided into four sections. The lower right corner is the MOUNTAIN WTH STARS, symbolizing the spirit of constant improvement in all areas of formation. On the upper right corner are the BOOK AND TORCH, symbolizing our faith in the Word of God, which should always guide our entire community. In the upper right and lower left corners are the CROSS, laid on a background of red and reminding us of the underlying motivation in the education of our students.

Our History

Prompted by the Holy Spirit and the population growth in Baltimore, Howard and Carroll counties in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, local Catholic parents and educators responded to the need for a unique center for superior academics and spiritual formation. Under the spiritual guidance of the Legionaries of Christ, and graced with generous benefactors, Woodmont opened its doors in 1995 with 49 students in a six-room renovated building in Woodstock, Maryland.

Woodmont was the first Catholic elementary school founded in twenty years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Families in the area embraced Woodmont’s unique blend of Catholic tradition, high academic standards and personalized attention in a nurturing environment. Woodmont outgrew its original campus in Woodstock and moved to Cooksville in 2003. This relocation was a crucial step in continuing to provide the highest quality education and formation to our students. When we began our 2003 school year, we became the first Catholic school in sixty years to open in Howard County We currently have an enrollment of over 300 students in Pre-K through grade 8.

Woodmont Academy students consistently rank in the top fifteenth percentile in national standardized tests when normed against other private schools. In addition, over ninety percent of our eighth grade graduates are admitted to their first-choice high school. The majority continue on with a Catholic education. Most girls attend Mount de Sales Academy and the boys select among Loyola, Mount St. Joseph’s and Calvert Hall high schools. The affinity which these graduates have for Woodmont is easily seen when they routinely visit our school for special events.

School traditions are part of what make Woodmont unique. Though we are a young school, we are building traditions that embrace the essence of who we are, such as regular adoration and confession, All Saints Day celebrations, First Friday Masses, and making Rosaries for our medical mission to El Salvador. Traditions such as these weave the threads of our formation into a beautiful tapestry that is indeed unique and invaluable.
